Welcome to the PokerCD.biz online poker school. Whether you are a complete poker beginner, or just looking to pick up some new skills, you’ve come to the right place! This mini poker guide will give you all the basics you need to play Texas Hold’em.
The first step in learning how to play poker is to become familiar with the winning hands. Memorize these hands before you attempt to play. Once you have committed the winning poker hands to memory, you are ready for your
first practice game. Take advantage of the Poker CD “for fun” in order to get some experience without wagering real money.
The first decision you will make in a game of poker will take place after the first cards have been dealt. You will have to decide if the game is worth playing, or
if you should fold immediately. In general, a beginner should stay in the game
if he or she holds two high cards (10, Jack, Queen, or King), any suited cards
with an Ace, and pairs of 7s or higher.
Many new players wonder about bluffing. However, bluffing is generally only to be used once a player gains some experience, and only against opponents who are fairly skilled, since new players tend to call everything. Also, at a table with many players, your bluff will be more likely to be called.
One of the most important pieces of advice that is commonly given to new players is not to be afraid to fold. Most of the money that you will lose in poker will not come from folding at the beginning, but rather from ending up beaten
by a slightly higher card at the end of the game. The moment you suspect that your opponent’s cards are higher than your own, it is time to fold.
Some new players mistakenly believe that being a poker shark means playing aggressively at all times. Other new players are so intimidated by the game
that they consistently play too carefully, folding easily unless they have a Royal
Flush or thereabouts. In fact, the best strategy is to vary your playing style throughout the game in order to confuse your opponents.
